Why is ice slippery?
Pressure exerted by your foot lowers the melting temperature of the top layer of ice
Friction exerted by your foot heats the ice and melts the top layer of ice
The water molecules on the top layer have nothing to help hold them in place and thus remain an unfrozen liquid
Scientists still don’t know
None Ya’ business
Believe it or not, scientists still do not understand why ice is slippery. All answers listed are thought to be potential explanations for why ice is slippery, but there is not a general consensus among the academic community for any one. It is one of life’s great mysteries.
Ice forms in phases, depending on pressure and temperature.
How many different phases of ice are there?
2
4
22
It’s NOT just a phase.
It was just ONE time in college. The ice grew out of it!
Ice can form in twenty-two known crystalline phases (plus a handful of amorphous ones), and they’re differentiated by their crystalline structure, ordering and density. The ice most commonly found in your freezer is known as Ice Ih. Sounds pretty bad-ass, doesn’t it? The ice that is most abundant in the universe is amorphous ice, a mysterious phase which lacks a crystal structure.
How much of the Earth’s water is frozen as either ice or snow?
1.7%
5.5%
10.2%
25%
980% (just making sure you’re paying attention)
The amount of water locked up in ice and snow is only about 1.7% of all water on Earth, but the majority of total freshwater on Earth (about 68.7%) is held in ice caps and glaciers.

What is the oldest ice ever discovered?
1.5 million years ago
2.7 million years ago
4 million years ago
6 million years ago
In 2025, scientists from the COLDEX project pulled ice from East Antarctica’s Allan Hills that’s been directly dated to roughly 6 million years old — the oldest ice ever found. Trapped air bubbles in the sample revealed a gradual Antarctic cooling of about 12°C across that span.
What kind of ice is in a Comet?
Classy Ice
Glassy Ice
Vanilla Ice
Dry Ice
The ice in comets is not the nice crystalline structure we know. Instead, it’s an amorphous (without form) random arrangement of molecules known as “glassy ice.” On earth, glassy ice can only form when water is rapidly cooled to -137C.
Who invented the first ice cube tray?
Guy L. Tinkham
Mary J. Blidge
Thomas Edison
Richard G. Drew
The first flexible stainless steel, all-metal ice cube tray was created by Guy L. Tinkham in 1933.
What is Ice Cube’s Real Name? (the Rapper)

What Year Was the Artificial Refrigerator Invented?
1776
1805
1818
1755
The history of artificial refrigeration began when Scottish professor William Cullen designed a small refrigerating machine in 1755.
In 1913, refrigerators for home and domestic use were invented by Fred W. Wolf of Fort Wayne, Indiana with models consisting of a unit that was mounted on top of an ice box.
What is the leading brand of ice machine makers?
Kold-Draft
Manitowoc
Scotsman
Hoshizaki
Hoshizaki leads globally by market share, and they didn’t get there by accident — they are prized for their rock-solid reliability and exceptionally clean, dense ice. Founded in 1947, they’ve had nearly 80 years to perfect the craft.
